Characteristics and Properties of Velvet Fabric

Velvet is a special type of fabric which is woven where the threads which are cut are distributed evenly as a shortened dense pile giving velvet a distinctive feel. It can be made from either synthetic or natural fibres. Velvet Fabric is woven by the help of a special loom that weaves two thickness of the material simultaneously. The pieces are cut apart which creates a pile effect and the two lengths of the fabric are wound on separate take-up rolls.

Velvet fabric can be made of several different fibres and one of them is silk. Velvet can be made as a mixture of rayon and silk. Cotton is also sometimes used to make velvet fabric. Linen, mohair and wool can also be used to manufacture velvet and more recently polyester, nylon, viscose and acetate have been used to make velvet either as different synthetics or from combined synthetic and natural fibres. At certain times spandex can be added to give the final material a stretch feeling.

Velvet fabric has been associated with nobility due to its texture which is soft and rich in appearance. Velvet has many advantages:

  • The texture of velvet is soft and it has a very luxurious look.
  • Velvet can blend easily with different decor styles.
  • Velvet has a high aesthetic value and can be used to improve appearance of clothes or properties where it is used.
  • Velvet is an accessory good to be used in cold places.

Because of these reasons velvet can be used to make upholstery, curtains, bed sheets and other household and commercial items which look amazing when velvet is used to decorate them. Velvet clothes are also very popular and velvet clothes are worn at special occasions like parties and weddings very frequently. For more information on velvet fabric visit Imported Theatre Fabrics.
